Google is perhaps THE Internet company, with dozens of products and services that revolve around the technology that has kept us connected for decades. For most people, the gateway to that Internet is, in fact, another Google product, with Chrome taking up the lion's share of the browser market. It's arguable that Google Chrome is the most used piece of software in the world, given how it's used on almost every computing device imaginable. That doesn't immediately mean, however, that it is the best way to experience the Web, and there are also serious reasons why you would want to avoid using Chrome if you can afford it.

Just because it's the most used doesn't mean it's the best. There are various factors that have contributed to Chrome's success in the market. And while credit has to be given to some features that did help sell the browser to users, it is far from being the most impressive when it comes to performance and stability. In fact, some Chrome users might even begrudgingly admit that they are forced to use the browser for this or that feature, despite having had many heartaches and headaches over the browser's performance

The Internet is filled with anecdotes about Chrome's insatiable hunger for RAM and battery power. At a time when people have become more dependent on laptops with relatively limited hardware resources as well as on the Web for work, study, or entertainment, a voracious web browser is probably the last thing they need. Actually, the last thing they need is for Chrome to crash because it ran out of memory or, worse, some bug from an extension.

To be fair, Google has been working to improve Chrome's performance and reduce its footprint, primarily by restricting how much Javascript works behind the background. At the same time, this may sometimes lead to suboptimal user experiences, which Google is also trying to avoid. It does still imply that Chrome is a huge beast by default, one that has to be tamed and put on a diet.

Once upon a time, web browsers competed in the number of third-party add-ons, sometimes known as extensions, they supported. The extension system allowed the browser to remain slim, at least in comparison to the behemoth that was Internet Explorer, while leaving the door open to functionality that the browser developers didn't envision or even intend. That, of course, required that the software had hooks that extensions could connect with to implement those features, which sometimes include being able to modify what users see on a web page or even touch files on a user's computer.

Unfortunately, extensions have also become a source of problems in the long run, endangering the stability of the browser as well as the security of users. Complicating matters is how Google ran its Chrome Web Store, which was even more open than its Google Play Store for Android. In exchange for a more open ecosystem, there was barely any quality control, and a lot of malware-laden extensions were able to slip through the cracks, often masquerading as extensions coming from reputable developers.

Google has been trying to plug up that large hole, but its strategy has been a two-edged sword. It has restricted what extensions can get access to in order to mitigate the negative side effects of harmful extensions but also removed functionality that some extensions needed. Unfortunately, it isn't a done deal either, and there are still some problematic add-ons that get past Google's scrutiny.

Add-ons and extensions were supposed to make browsers simpler and lightweight, but things didn't always turn out that way in the end. In addition to being a resource-hungry piece of software, Chrome is also a complex one, and its complexity bleeds into its configuration options. Almost like any Google product, Chrome has pages upon pages of settings that the browser itself requires a mini search engine to look for the appropriate controls.

There are pros and cons to this "feature," of course. On the one hand, it gives the user more control over how a browser behaves, allowing them to tweak almost every aspect of the experience. On the other hand, it is almost too easy to get lost in a sea of options, and it's also just as easy to bury important privacy or security settings to discourage users from looking for those. There is, indeed, a search option, but that presumes you know what to look for in the first place.

Despite being considered to be "heavy," Chrome is ironically slow to actually add new features, at least compared to something like Microsoft Edge or even Opera. Yes, there is a new Chrome release almost every month (though Google is now adjusting that), but that rate only means that most of the changes are bite-sized and focus on fixes rather than big new features.

This means that Chrome doesn't always catch up with the latest trends or users' wishes, but that might be fine for some people. Given the browser's infamy for resource usage, users might definitely prefer that Google focus on polish rather than fluff. Extra functionality could be added by extensions, but the way Google pulled the rug from under those may have caused some disgruntled developers to walk away from the browser entirely.

Chrome is one of the most ubiquitous gateways to the Internet, where most of Google's money-making products and services can be found. In other words, it is pretty much the portal into Google's services, and it is becoming increasingly obvious that Google is shaping it up to be like one. It works the other way around as well, and some of the best Chrome features can only be experienced if you are already using other Google products.

There has been an increasing number of features that integrate other Google products into Chrome. While that might seem logical from a business perspective, it also raises regulatory red flags when it comes to anti-competitive and monopolistic business practices. It naturally runs the risk of favoring Google's other products even when a web browser should mostly be indifferent to anything outside of it. Conversely, it also makes it harder to switch away from those other Google products once you're already knee-deep into them, thanks to Chrome.

Google, the company behind cutting-edge artificial intelligence and machine learning projects like Tensor Flow, Magenta, and Imagen, is reportedly getting desperate to showcase its AI chops. After OpenAI wowed the collective world's imagination with generative

AI tools like Dall-E and ChatGPT while archrival Microsoft kept pouring billions and getting strategic control over OpenAI's toys, Google was feeling unprecedented competitive heat. Now, the company has decided to spring into action, and that means stuffing AI features into its most popular products.

According to a report from Bloomberg, an internal code red message has told employees that "all of its most important products — those with more than a billion users — must incorporate generative AI within months."

The AI push has already resulted in some public announcements. To combat the rising threat of a ChatGPT-powered Bing search browser, Google recently detailed its own version called Bard. The company has also promised such tools for creators on the cash cow platform that is YouTube, allowing them to virtually change outfits in videos.

Google's desperation is odd, yet interesting. The company's AI research team is a behemoth in the field, churning out some of the most-cited groundbreaking papers in the past decade. According to The Wall Street Journal,

a pair of Google employees actually pushed for releasing a ChatGPT-like chatbot and even integrating it with Google Assistant over two years, but their requests were denied considering AI safety and ethics standards. The concerns were not unfounded, as even stunningly advanced models like ChatGPT have a bias and factual accuracy problem.

However, it's not just cutting-edge AI tools like LaMDA that it needs to compete with the likes of Microsoft, but how well the underlying tech is integrated into mainstream products like Gmail, Search, and Maps that have billions of users.

Microsoft already has a lead with tools like GitHub Copilot that uses OpenAI's Codex engine, Bing has been injected with ChatGPT fuel, and more AI magic is in the pipeline for tools like Team as well as the bread-and-butter Office tools like Outlook and Excel, among others.

The device is slim, with a 165.9×76.2×8 mm overall footprint, and lightweight – tipping the scale at 188g. It has a side-mounted fingerprint reader, which sits below the volume rocker on the right side for security.

If you’ve ever owned a Motorola smartphone, the Moto G73 should feel like home. It flaunts a typical Motorola design made with plastic. The back panel houses a shiny square bump with a dual-camera setup and an LED flash. Moto G73 comes in Lucent White and Midnight Blue colourways

Samsung’s flagship phone trio seemingly has something for everyone. Prefer a smaller phone that doesn’t compromise on power? Pick up a Galaxy S23. Demand the very best camera hardware, or like sketching with an S Pen? The S23 Ultra should fit the bill. The Samsung Galaxy S23+ falls somewhere between the two.

But that was also true of the outgoing Galaxy 22+, and on the surface this doesn’t look like a year for big changes. The rear lens trio is identical, and the style shake-up (inspired by the S23 Ultra) is very much on the minimal side. Performance takes a leap, courtesy of the latest Snapdragon silicon, and battery size has increased – but is that enough to justify a considerable price hike, when rivals can be had for a whole lot less

From the front there’s no clue you’re looking at the latest Galaxy phone, and not last year’s model. The S23+ is ultimately another glass and metal sandwich, with pretty much identical dimensions to the S22+. Even the pastel-hued colours aren’t all that different, with black, cream, green and pink on offer.

Flip it over, though, and you’ll spot three bare camera lenses in place of the old ‘contour cut’ camera bump, for a stronger family connection to the Ultra variant. It won’t need to live in your pocket for very long before becoming a magnet for dust, but IP68 protection means you can just wipe it down with a damp cloth.

Both sides of the phone use Gorilla Glass Victus 2 glass, which promises extra drop resistance over previous efforts. That reportedly includes a 1m drop directly onto concrete, although we decided not to tempt fate with our review sample. It certainly stayed free from scrapes and microscratches throughout testing.

With its 6.6in display, the S23+ feels substantially larger in the hand than the regular S23. That phone is positively diddy compared to the rest of the Android world, which has largely embraced big screens across the board. We found it much easier to type here without tripping over our digits, so it should be the obvious choice for barrel-fisted Samsung fans. The slightly curvy metal frame is still perfectly palm-friendly, being thick enough to provide plenty of grip but not so portly it’ll feel uncomfortable in a trouser pocket. We also found the rounded corners and a taller, thinner aspect ratio made it more comfortable to hold than the equivalent iPhone 14.

Top marks to Samsung for using more recycled materials in its phones this year, too. The power and volume buttons apparently are made from recycled fishing nets, but you wouldn’t know it – they feel just a premium as the rest of the phone. They’re a little further up the right side of the phone this year, however. Smaller hands might have stretch to reach them.

Samsung can usually be relied on to deliver some stunning quality smartphone screens, and the S23+ is no different, although on the surface little seems to have changed from last year. It has the same 2340×1080 resolution as the outgoing S22+, stretched across the same 6.6in. That means a slightly lower pixel density than the S23, but everything still looks pin-sharp at arm’s length.

You still get a 120Hz variable refresh rate, which helps deliver gloriously smooth scrolling without also thrashing the battery when displaying a static image. Even apps that usually don’t like adaptive refresh modes looked flawless here. The flat glass doesn’t have any of the reflectivity issues found on phones with curved edge screens, either, so viewing angles are superb.

The biggest change is to brightness, with the panel now able to max out at a retina-blasting 1750nits peak. That’s on par with the pricier S23 Ultra, and a big step up from last year’s 1300 nit maximum. It makes all the difference outdoors, making it easy to see what’s onscreen even in bright sunlight. It gives HDR video impressive depth, too.

Colours in general are delightfully vibrant, without oversaturating things too much, and contrast is suitably epic. There’s a decent amount of customisation on offer if you prefer a more vivid appearance.

The stereo speakers are a decent pairing to the display, if not the best sound we’ve heard from a smartphone. They get satisfyingly loud and reasonably clear, if lacking a little presence. We expected the larger dimensions to help here, but felt it was just on par with the more compact Galaxy S23. Still, you won’t need headphones just to catch up on your podcast queue.

Imagine yourself using your Chromebook but in a completely different way. Did you know you can open certain apps or the Files section with a keyboard shortcut? If you work with multiple windows on your device, some shortcuts can help you align the windows in particular directions on the screen. You probably spend most of your time on the web browser, and there are plenty of shortcuts to help with that as well. It doesn't matter if your Chromebook is touch-enabled, as you can access the notifications section through your keyboard.

Using some keyboard shortcuts requires a one-time setup, but given how useful they are, you shouldn't mind spending a few minutes. With that said, we present some keyboard shortcuts that every user should know. If you're reading this article on your Chromebook, minimize the Chrome window to try out the shortcuts as you read about them. For browser-related shortcuts, we recommend opening a new window.

The Chrome OS on your Chromebook lets you open several apps from the app shelf at the bottom of the home screen, which contains shortcuts. By default, Chrome OS adds some pre-loaded apps to the shelf, but you can change or re-order the apps. You access the apps by clicking on them with a trackpad or mouse,

but you can use the Alt + 1 to 9 keyboard shortcut to load a particular app from the shelf. When you press Alt + 1, Chrome OS will load the first app from the left on the shelf. Similarly, if you hit Alt + 2, it will open the second app from the left, and so on. If you have to open the same apps daily for work or studies, pinning them to the app shelf and re-arranging them could do wonders for you. Interestingly, you can even pin web pages to the app shelf.

Now that you know how to open apps with shortcuts, you must know how to dock them to a particular side of the screen. Typically, you would use the trackpad or a mouse to select and drag a window to a side, but with this keyboard shortcut, you can dock a window instantaneously. Press Alt + [ to dock a window to the screen's left or press Alt + ] to dock another window to the right.

Have you ever noticed that your Chromebook shows you an older website version? It is probably because of excessive cache files. Like Windows PC, the web browser on a Chromebook stores information in its memory. This data (cache) helps the browser to load web pages faster and reduces the time you have to wait. However, in due course, your device accumulates this data to the extent that it can mess with the updated website version. In such a scenario, the Ctrl + Shift + r shortcut should help you reload the webpage without using cached data. Hitting this shortcut saves time that would otherwise go into manually deleting all the cache files.

If you spend a lot of time typing queries in the search, you will love the next Chromebook keyboard shortcut, which enables you to access the address bar quickly. Pressing Alt + d keys instantly selects the page's web address. You can press the backspace key or start typing a new search query right away. Using this shortcut, you can easily jump from one search engine result page to another, especially while conducting in-depth research about a topic.

While using your Chromebook, you download certain files, including images, videos, word documents, PDFs, etc. However, you have to open the Files app from the launcher to access them. From any window, Shift + Alt + m will open the Files app with the Downloads folder containing the images and other files you've saved over time.

While you're writing, there are some other common Chromebook keyboard shortcuts that could help you. First, to turn Caps Lock on or off, press the Search + Alt key. If you wish to delete the next word while compiling text in a document, press Alt + Backspace. This shortcut should be of great help as you don't get a dedicated Delete key on your Chromebook's keyboard. Last but not least, if you ever need help with any of the Chromebooks shortcuts, hit Ctrl + Alt to go through the list of all the shortcuts available.

Even as bezels cut back and handy capabilities which include the headphone jack disappear from our telephones, those gadgets have reputedly inexplicably grown ever large. As the road among telephones and drugs turns into properly and surely blurred, it`s comprehensible that many humans now preference a extra transportable and pocketable cell telecellsmartphone. Sadly, such petite gadgets have grown more and more more few and a long way among. Miniaturization calls for sacrifice in maximum cases, and withinside the limitless phone palms race, it is all approximately electricity, cameras, and maximizing display screen actual estate. Small telephones are not able to compete withinside the battle for cell supremacy.

Despite this, there are nevertheless suitable alternatives available for much less glaring telephones. From turn telephones as primary as they're affordable, to modern folding display screen gadgets that provide flagship electricity in a diminutive pocket-pleasant shape thing, to extra conventional smartphones that seem to had been hit through a cut back ray, there are compelling tiny telephones to be discovered even on this age of the phablet.

For the ones attempting to find an old-college turn telecellsmartphone, the Nokia 2720 V Flip is an extraordinary option. It gives a shape thing much like that of the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip four, however for a fragment of the price, albeit with the constrained capability you'll anticipate from a telecellsmartphone with an old fashioned keypad. With that said, there may be plenty to endorse the Nokia 2720 V Flip over the ever present phone, and also you is probably amazed through what number of capabilities are to be had in a telecellsmartphone with a layout that is almost unfashionable at this point.

This turn telecellsmartphone clearly has apps like YouTube, Google maps, and email, and whilst they are truely extra tough to apply than on a phone, having the choice to get right of entry to them is a superb thing. Battery lifestyles is a incredible benefit for the V Flip, as it could pass for multiple days without having to be recharged, and may final in standby mode for almost a month. Of course, the huge blessings of a primary turn telecellsmartphone like this are that it is exceedingly cheap, and it allow you to in case you're looking to distance your self from social media and do a virtual detox whilst retaining the primary connectivity that is emerge as so essential withinside the virtual age.

The length of the V Flip is just 7.fifty nine x 2.15 x 0.forty six inches spread out and four.thirteen x 2.15 x 0.seventy four inches whilst folded., and is going for $108 on Amazon unlocked. The subsequent access at the listing is a near contender in length with the Nokia 2720 V Flip, however the Nokia tool is only a tiny bit large whilst folded — and is without problems the longest (or tallest, relying on the way you examine it) tool at the listing whilst spread out.

One of the high-quality examples of ways folding display screen generation can provide actual, realistic benefits, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip four permits a huge, flagship telecellsmartphone to fold down right into a tiny, pocket-pleasant package. Despite boasting a spacious 6.7-inch display screen while spread out, the Flip four folds in 1/2 of, and whilst this doubles its thickness, the ensuing compact rectangle is plenty extra pocketable than a standard phone. Unfolded it measures 6.five x 2.eight x 0.three inches, folded it measures three.three x 2.eight x 0.6-0.7 inches.

Unlike many smaller telephones, the Flip four does not compromise plenty in terms of processing electricity and capabilities. The twin digital digicam array boasts each huge and ultra-huge lenses, and way to the 1.nine-inch cowl display screen, you could use those number one cameras to seize selfies, aleven though there may be additionally a devoted selfie digital digicam on the alternative facet of the telecellsmartphone. The Snapdragon eight+ Gen 1 and 8GB of RAM below the hood positioned it withinside the identical ballpark as modern-day flagship telephones.

There are a few tradeoffs with the foldable layout. The Flip four has a reasonably constrained battery lifestyles, the folding display screen is not flawlessly flat while spread out, and there are long-time period sturdiness issues inherent in folding display screen telephones. However, the fact is that the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip four is the high-quality small telecellsmartphone you could purchase proper now. The Flip four is to be had unlocked beginning at $899.

If you want the iPhone thirteen Mini however might pick some thing extra modern, the Asus Zenfone nine is a exceptional Android-powered alternative. Released withinside the latter 1/2 of of 2022, the ZenFone nine is a particular-searching tool; with its small five.nine-inch AMOLED display screen and nearly bulbous twin cameras, it genuinely stands proud from the crowd. The Snapdragon eight+ Gen 1 paired with as plenty as a whopping 16GB of RAM positioned it past many flagship telephones in phrases of ability performance, at the least on paper, and it makes use of a vapor chamber cooling device to keep away from the ones effective additives overheating.

The ZenFone nine consists of each a huge and ultrawide digital digicam, however it is the huge digital digicam with its 50MP sensor that is probably the maximum thrilling unmarried characteristic of the Zenfone nine, for the reason that it makes use of inner gimbal stabilization. That as a substitute particular characteristic and makes the Zenfone nine really well worth thinking about in case you shoot a whole lot of video together along with your telecellsmartphone, even in case you do not always want a tiny telecellsmartphone.

The simplest huge disadvantage right here is that it does not guide wi-fi charging, which, in a modern, exceedingly high-cease phone is a relatively atypical omission. While it is now no longer for everyone (mainly people with huge hands), if absolutely the smallest telecellsmartphone viable is what you are looking for, it is the Zanco Tiny T2.This telecellsmartphone is referred to as T2 due to the fact there

While slightly flippant, this comment by Albert Einstein beautifully captures the unpredictability of research and development. Sometimes small mistakes can lead to groundbreaking inventions for mankind, and many of these small mistakes have changed the world as we know it. Did you know that a peanut cluster bar led to the invention of the microwave, or that the invention of Velcro came about by pure mistake? Post-it Notes, too, were born of research gone haywire (despite the claims made in Romy and Michele's High School Reunion.

As noted real-estate developer Albert M. Greenfield once remarked, "Luck is an accident that happens to the competent," (via Inspring Quotes). It also happens to the persistent, as any inventor can attest to.

Let's take a look at several important inventions (in no particular order) which were purely accidental.Believe it or not, the pacemaker were not what developer Wilson Greatbatch was out to create. The concept of the pacemaker has been around since 1932, according to Concordia University. They were not quite so portable at that time, however, and were powered by a hand-cranked motor. Not nearly as convenient as the automated machines we have today.

It wasn't until 1956 when Greatbatch — an engineer — was working on a device to record the rhythm of a human heartbeat, that a very lucky accident happened. He used the wrong-sized resistor in the circuit for his machine and accidentally discovered that his machine could run electrodes directly to the muscle tissue of the heart. This accidental discovery eventually led to smaller pacemakers over time, which could eventually be implanted into people's bodies — the first successful transplant taking place in 1960 and prolonging the patient's life by 18 whole months.

Wilhelm Roentgen discovered X-Rays and thus changed the world. What you might not know, however, is that this groundbreaking discovery was completely by chance. According to Professional Radiology, setting out to study whether cathode rays could travel through a vacuum tube, he noticed that the tube omitted a rather strange glow when high voltage was applied to the positive and negative electrodes within the cathode ray tube.

Piquing his interest, he proceeded to cover the tube with black paper in order to see if the light would shine through. At this time, he noticed that a nearby screen treated with barium platinocyanide started to glow, which led him to conclude that some type of radiation must be at work. He named this radiation X-Ray, with the X representing the unknown. Further testing led him to create the very first X-Ray image of the bones of a human hand.

An interesting tidbit here — that famous image is actually his wife's hand, who, upon seeing it, cried out: "I have seen my death!" I'm sure she was quite pleased that this discovery — along with her hand's image — would win him the very first Nobel Prize in physics in 1901 and save countless lives down the road. Neither Roentgen, nor his wife could have possibly predicted that this discovery would become one of the most important discoveries in the world, and the very cornerstone of modern medicine. A discovery, which is used in daily life all over the world.

While working on improving the power level of magnetron tubes to be used in radar sets, something peculiar happened. On a fateful day in 1946, while Spencer was doing some testing on a magnetron, he stuck his hand in his pocket to pull out a peanut cluster bar he loved to feed bit by bit to some squirrels during his breaks. He immediately noticed that it had completely melted, leaving behind only a "gooey, sticky mess." Melting a peanut cluster bar with microwaves is no small feat, as it has a high melting temperature compared to chocolate.

Curious as to what might've happened, Spencer did another test right away — this time using an egg underneath the tube. Mere moments later, the egg exploded, covering his face in egg debris. Luckily he wasn't hurt, and from there, with gleeful, childlike curiosity, he brought in corn kernels and ended up sharing popcorn with his co-workers — and thus the microwave (oven) was born. Just a year later, this invention officially hit the market, and the rest — as they say — is history

When deciding on your next smartphone, the first question is invariably whether to get an iPhone or an Android. The general consensus was that you go for an iPhone if you want a phone that works without tweaking, with a camera that handles most conditions, and for Android to customize your handset's feel and look. The gap has been narrowing in recent years. Apple has been adding more user customizability to iOS. Android manufacturers have been locking off bootloader access and adding other security methods like Samsung's Knox, which locks out some features if a custom ROM is flashed to the device.

Apple has an advantage in that it controls the hardware and the software and has an ecosystem of other devices marketed to lifestyle users. There are many Android manufacturers, so creating a closed ecosystem like this is trickier. The competition is fierce, with new features coming out on one device before the rest of the market copies it for their own. That said, some features exist only on iPhone, which keeps Apple users returning for their next device at upgrade time. We've rounded up our favorite iPhone features that Android users can't access

The infamous green and blue bubble argument will disappear once Android can use iMessage. Until then, iPhone users will stay with Apple, which the company knows as iMessage was kept exclusive as a retention method. Shame, as it could have been the default standard for messaging across all mobile operating systems.

The biggest bonus in the days before unlimited cellular contracts was that iMessage used Wi-Fi or cellular data to send the messages, so it didn't eat into precious SMS allocations from the carrier. Now SMS messaging is usually unlimited, but users are already hooked on using iMessage and its many other features. The most well-known is its synchronization across devices so that the same messages turn up on iPhone, iPad, Mac, or any other device signed into that Apple ID

That's only scratching the surface of the functionality inside iMessage. The service supports inline replies, pinned conversations, and filtering unknown senders into their own inbox. The service is no longer a basic SMS messenger, with the ability to tag participants in group chats, send handwritten notes, share your location with friends and family, send money, and play games with your contacts.

Smartphone users have been able to use their devices as a webcam for their Windows or Mac computers for years. Apps like DroidCam or Camo sync the feed from the smartphone's camera into the computer, so it looks like a webcam to the operating system. Both options work wirelessly or wired but require additional software installed on your computer and some setup time. There's also no guarantee they will work with your videoconferencing software, and often require a paid upgrade to the pro option before features like higher resolution and image quality tools are enabled.

With the release of macOS Ventura and iOS 16, iPhone users don't need to install or set up third-party apps to use their iPhone as their webcam. Continuity Camera requires minimal setup as long as the same Apple ID is signed in on both devices. It's a matter of selecting the iPhone as the webcam in any Mac app that uses the camera or microphone. That starts the rear-facing camera on the iPhone, feeding its image into the Mac app. Once set the first time, as long as your iPhone is near the Mac, the devices will sync up every time a recording app opens. It also has one feature no other app has, in Desk View. This uses the ultrawide camera to display a top-down view of your desk and your face.

The deep integration of FaceTime to iOS and its simplicity are big pluses for Apple's video calling tool. Google generally has a problem with messaging apps and can't decide if you should use Meet or Duo, with many users preferring third-party options like WhatsApp or Skype. FaceTime is preloaded on iPhones, iPads, and Macs, providing a consistent video-calling experience across all Apple platforms. It could be so much more if Apple would create native apps for Windows and Android so that the rest of the world could use FaceTime. Xerox might be a business relic nowadays, but the name is synonymous with photocopying a document. Google is synonymous with internet searching, and many other brands like Jell-O are now the de facto name for the category of thing they were famous for.

FaceTime could be the king of video calling for personal and business use. All it would take is for Apple to open up its walled garden a little more. There are over 1.5 billion iPhones in daily use worldwide, and that's a little over 21% of the world's population, all with a FaceTime-ready device in their pocket. Apple has already started to take advantage of this, with a way to share a FaceTime request to users on Android or Windows so they can connect via their browser. It's a half-measure, but it could be testing the waters for something bigger.

FaceTime can be used to get together with friends and family from far away, but any video calling app can do that. Other video calling apps don't have SharePlay, enabling watching shows, movies, and videos, listening to music, or doing fitness routines with other people over FaceTime. Apple users can start content while already on a FaceTime call, which is then synced on the screens of everyone on the call so they can watch together while apart. It can also be initiated from inside any of the growing list of content apps, from live streaming to sports to movies and fitness, by sending a FaceTime request from the sharing menu.

To be fair to Android, Google partnered with Samsung to create Google Duo's Live Sharing feature which is like SharePlay-lite. Because nothing in Android messaging is straightforward, Google Duo is now Google Meet, which enables the Samsung Galaxy S22 range, the Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 series, and Pixel phones to use Live Sharing. Android's version of SharePlay shares a live feed of one user's phone. It's not using native apps for the content, so it could be stretched if devices have different sizes or resolutions. It also only gives the person sharing control over playback.

Press Alt + [number key] to open apps
